Deeply rooted: Longtime PCSD administrator Christopher Byrne selected as next superintendent

Building upon nearly 15 years of administrative experience in the Phoenix Central School District, longtime administrator and former Central Square teacher Christopher Byrne has been named the district’s next superintendent.

In a unanimous vote March 14, the PCSD Board of Education approved Byrne as the successor to Judy Belfield, who will retire in June. The decision came after an intensive search and interview process in which Byrne’s experience, qualifications and dedication to Phoenix schools propelled him forward.

“Chris has been here for 15 years and he knows the district inside and out,” said PCSD Board of Education President Earl Rudy. “The board is looking forward to working with him as superintendent.”

Byrne, who currently holds the position of Executive Director of Instruction, Personnel and Educational Services for the district, said he is grateful for the opportunity to serve the PCSD in this new capacity.

“It is a tremendous responsibility with monumental rewards, and I feel honored to be selected as the next Superintendent of Schools,” Byrne said. “We have an excellent board of education, a dedicated administrative team, a committed faculty and staff, great students and parents, and a tight-knit community. I’m confident that I have the skills and experience necessary to help continue to move the district forward.”

Byrne noted that the best way to ensure the PCSD continues its forward momentum is by making decisions that are in the best interest of all students. He cited his student-centered mentality and experience in education as key traits that he will bring to the position.

“My building-level and district-level experience gives me a unique perspective,” Byrne said. “I want to make a difference for our students, our district and our community.”

Eager to make an impact, Byrne outlined some of his goals as superintendent. He said he will continue to focus on academics and student opportunities while providing teachers and support staff with professional development and educational resources needed.

“The faculty and staff are a huge asset here in Phoenix,” Byrne said. “We’re always researching ways to improve instruction in our classrooms.  We’re focused on improving ourselves as professionals and improving the opportunities for our students – that’s why we’re here.”

Byrne will officially begin his service as Superintendent of Schools on July 1.
